ERIK ISAKSEN (NOR) CHALLENGES BERNARD VANDAMME (BEL) FOR THE EUROPEAN
CHAMPIONSHIP
Erik Isaksen, the reigning champion of Norway, challenges Bernard Vandamme,
the EUROSTARS European Champion from Belgium, to a title match in Järvenpää
in Finland on the 14th August 2004. EUROSTARS sanctions this match as an
official title defence on Bernard Vandamme's half. Erik Isaksen's Norwegian
Championship is not on the line.
Bernard Vandamme won the European Championship in a tournament final against
Spain's Dragon de Oro on the 16th May 2003. Since he won the title, Vandamme
has defended the title against Michael Kovac (Austria), Cybernic Machine,
Aykut (Turkey), Bad Mask and Igor Bolchoÿ (Russia).
The European Championship was established in 1978 with separate heavyweight
and middleweight champions. In 2003, the two weight classes were joined
together and a tournament put together to declare a new champion, who
ulitimately became Bernard Vandamme. Title matches have taken place in
several countries, including France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Spain,
Portugal, Macedonia and Holland.
The management of EUROSTARS is proud that the European Championship now will
be defended in northern Europe, and the organisation considers the reigning
Norwegian Champion Erik Isaksen as a qualified challenger to Bernard
Vandamme. EUROSTARS hopes that the wrestling fans of Finland look forward to
see history in the making as the European Championship is put on the line
for the first time ever in their country.
