Well, this is the end of the feud that nobody saw coming. In mid-2003 the Briscoe Brothers left ROH to play college football, or so it seemed. The Briscoes both returned in separate matches at Beating the Odds, stating that wrestling was more important to them than football. Mark faced BJ Whitmer in a great match and Jay Briscoe won a match against Samoa Joe, AJ Styles and Chris Sabin, thus, say it with me now, beating the odds. Since Joe was in the match, Jay was granted a title shot at Tradition Continues. Joe didn't take Jay seriously and said he'd embarrass him at the show. Well, he won, but not before Jay gave him
a serious run for his money. At the Conclusion, Joe teamed up with AJ Styles to challenge for the Briscoes' tag titles in the best tag match in ROH history. AJ was to challenge Joe for the title the next night, so they weren't on the same page and Mark got the pin on Joe. Because of this Mark got a title shot at Final Battle 2003, but he got slaughtered. Joe tried for the tag belts again with American Dragon and Jerry Lynn, and failed both times, the second of which Jay pinned Joe, earning this title shot. So what started as another throw away Joe match that everyone knew Joe would win became a months long, and very good feud. And now, the infamous cage match.
