Probably the best indication of how big pro wrestling used to be culturally in Japan came out in a national poll this past week, asking people, divided equally among men and women in a scientific poll as opposed to an Internet poll, all over the age of 40, and asked what was their favorite athlete of the Showa era (1925-1988).

Pro wrestlers finished fourth through sixth place, with Giant Baba fourth, Rikidozan fifth and Antonio Inoki sixth. Rikidozan is really the country’s biggest legend. But since he died in 1963, while the name is known, he would not be a childhood favorite of anyone under the age of 55 or so. At one point, and it may still be the case, his significance in Japanese culture, from being the model athlete of a country rebuilding its culture after being decimated in World War II, and for his role in popularizing television, Rikidozan, and his 1955 matches with the Sharpe Brothers, was taught about in grade school history. Rikidozan was the only person of that era ranked even near the top.

If you took a similar national poll in the U.S. of people over the age of 40, it is doubtful on a national basis that any pro wrestler would be anywhere close to the top. Some would be in selected markets (The Crusher once won a poll as the most popular deceased athlete in Milwaukee, but it was an Internet based poll where he had wrestling fans heavily campaigning for him). In similar lists in the U.S., no pro wrestlers even crack the top 100, let alone top ten.

In Mexico, the truth is, El Santo would probably win such a poll as some years back when there was a poll of the most popular Mexican of all-time, not limited to athletes, he was top five, ranking ahead of all actors and athletes and alongside the most famous political leaders.

We have heard from sources close to both sides that he has been in negotiations at times with the company since his contract expired last year. According to a new report on ProWrestling.net, there is a buzz within TNA Wrestling that Sting, Kevin Nash and Bobby Lashley are set to rejoin the company in the near future.

The report claims that while an official return date is unconfirmed for all three guys, however, a strong possibility is the February 3rd show (which will be taped on January 31st).

Tuo siis oli Wrestling Observerin tai oikeastaan sen japanilaisen lähteen virhe. Meltzer tuskin tietää juuri mitään pienten promootoiden kuvioista. Eiköhän Weekly Prossa ollut nimi oikein.

Tämä on vain arvailua, mutta Prince Devitt sai varmaan lähes kaikki perinteisten promootioiden fanien äänet, kun taas Dragon Gatella (Pac & Ricochet), DDT:llä (Omega) ja SMASHilla on kaikilla kai omat innokkaat ja vähän erilaiset kannattajansa, jotka äänestävät suosikkipromootionsa edustajaa. Samahan se oli tossa Fortune vs EV2 feudissa jo, itse ainakin kannatin Fortunea koko feudin ajan. Tosin eikö tämä ole kuitenkin inhimillisempää kuin wwe:n touhu missä on aina paha vs hyvä (cena) ihmiset kuitenkin toimivat erilaisista motiiveista johtuen ja ovatko he hyvä vai pahoja on kiinni näkökulmasta, siinä mielessä tna on realistisempaa. Katsojat saa itse päättää ketä kannustaa, vaikka jotkut ovat heelejä ja jotkut faceja näin näennäisesti.

Slam! Wrestling is reporting there was an incident in India earlier today involving former WWE World champion The Great Khali where his bodyguard shot into a crowd as Khali was arriving at the home of a Deputy Speaker of the Punjab State Assemby, Satpal Gosain.

Khali, who had been invited to visit with Gosain as Gosain's son is a big Khali fan, was besieged by fans looking for autographs as he arrived. The Slam! report noted that Khali's bodyguard was "hostile" towards the fans and began shoving at the crowd, including physically attacking "a boy." When others tried to intercede, the bodyguard pulled a gun and shot into the crowd.

Khali is said to have fled the scene.

There were said to have been three "serious" injuries stemming from the incident, which was picked up by one of India's 24 hour news channels, Aaj Tak.

Mitä Khali uutiseen tulee, nii hei come on... se on Intia, siellä nyt joka päivä kymmeniä pelkästään tallaantuu kuoliaaksi.

-Before Christian was injured a story was being developed to turn Christian heel and work a program with Matt Hardy. The seeds were being dropped on Smackdown at the time Christian was injured.

-I pitched Drew McIntyre a story that would kick off after Money in the Bank in which he would be the Superstar to have taken out Undertaker… with some help.

-At one point Kane vs. Big Show for the World Heavyweight Title was considered for WrestleMania 27.

-Vince’s philosophy on Daniel Bryan is he isn’t an ass kicker but he can beat you because he can capitalize on your mistakes. In this instance, it works. On the other hand Vince thinks John Morrison can’t kick anyone’s ass in a real fight therefore he can’t be a top babyface. Morrison has the chance to take the ball and run with it, but he is running uphill.

-Sheamus Backstage Interview: “The great white shark” line is a perfect example of trying to appease Vince McMahon who enjoys animal kingdom references. We have all been guilty of it.

-As much as it seems Christian turns into the fan favorite choice to win Money in the Bank Match each year it’s not going to happen. Christian is seen as a good hand that can help some of the younger talent and does not have a lot of support from higher ups to be a Main Event guy. Edge vs. Christian as a Main Event program has been pitched to death and rejected every time.

-Walking into the arena that day Drew McIntyre was set to win the Money in the Bank briefcase. But Drew wasn’t the Superstar who was originally set to win. That was Kane, but was changed later after Kevin Dunn agreed with my philosophy that it would benefit a younger guy to carry that briefcase for a while. So it was set one week before the Pay-Per-View, Drew was to win Money in the Bank. While in the production meeting hours before the show a case was made to have Kane win the briefcase and cash in that night. The thought process? Sheamus was retaining the WWE Title; Miz was winning the RAW Money in the Bank (more on this later) and certain people felt like the average fan would have the feeling too many heels won. Keep in mind Kane would turn heel by defeating one of the most popular WWE Superstars in WWE by cashing in. None to less, the feeling was that this was the first ever Money in the Bank PPV and something needed to happen to brand this PPV as “anything can happen.” I gave the argument that the current storyline had Kane wanting to capture the holy grail for his brother and by doing so tonight took away any future story you had with Kane trying to take it off a someone who may have “took out” Undertaker. I added Kane should challenge Mysterio at Summerslam and go over there.

-Usos fell victim to bad timing. Usos seemed to be on a roll when we debuted them. I was proud of the promo The Usos and I wrote for their debut. Unfortunately two things happened. Nexus debuted shortly after and Vince didn’t understand the hip-hop culture thus didn’t get the appeal of the Usos. I think he was wrong. My wife doesn’t watch wrestling, but she found the Usos entertaining. That should say something.

-Fun Fact: My original pitch for Jack Swagger as World Heavyweight Champion was to have a series of matches with Undertaker beginning at Summerslam and have Swagger defeat Undertaker clean twice in a row. Undertaker can make someone a star and I think WWE is missing out on that

-The original idea behind the Usos was to present them as the opposite of what you would expect out of a Samoan Superstar. Educated, Intelligent and actual wear boots. Usos would essentially have been the Russell Simmons of the WWE. That preppy hip-hop style. I think the characters had some real legs.

-Fun Fact #2: Vince McMahon appointed me the exclusive writer for LayCool. Not because she got that special privilege but because we asked for it. Let me take this time to say Michelle McCool gets zero favors because she is married to Undertaker. Michelle McCool accomplished everything she got because she was the best. If you need to blame someone you need to blame me because I was the one who would push hard for anything Michelle got on TV. Michelle could wrestle and Michelle could talk, a lot of MALE Superstars can’t do that and Michelle would have been successful with or without Undertaker. There were a lot of people who wanted to see Michelle fail and she fought that the entire time I was there.

-Kelly Kelly can help bring a lot of viewers to WWE. She needs to be presented in a way to accomplish that. Gina Carano brought a ton of fans to female MMA and Kelly Kelly can do the same. It’s a shame they don’t focus more on her.

-Fun Fact #3: I was hired based on a writing sample involving Ted Dibiase winning Money in the Bank at WrestleMania 25 and cashing it in on Randy Orton later that night. The story involved DiBiase never forgetting Orton punting him in the skull.

-Vince actually sees Skip Sheffield as a potential #2 babyface in the company.

En näe syytä miksei. Helposti eniten tähtiainesta ensimmäisen kauden NXT-rookieista. Skip voisi olla jo nyt tähti ilman loukkaantumistaan ja jos häntä oltaisiin käytetty enemmän. Uusia kasvoja sitä paitsi tarvitaan, ja Vince tunnetusti pitää isoista miehistä.

Vaikea kyllä Skipiä main eventterinä nähdä, vaikka tyypistä pidänkin. Sinänsä toki positiivista jos Vince tykkää, itse ainakin pelkäsin että mies saa lähtöpassit kaikessa hiljaisuudessa toipuessaan vammastaan (mikä sen nyt olikaan, joku nilkka tms.). Skip on siitäkin hyvä että jo nähdyn perusteella toimii sekä facena että heelinä, pikaista paranemista ja paluuta odotellessa...

Yhtenä syynä tälle hän esittää, että uudet hankinnat pitää pitää tyytyväisinä, eikä heitä haluta myöskään altistaa Joen stiffailulle.

Loppuhaastattelun kayfabemaisempi "hakkaan kaikki" -puhe oli oikein toimivaa promotusta mitä näkisi mielellään enemmän Impactissakin. Kunpa Joe olisi vielä kehässäkin niin kova kuin antaa haastattelussa ymmärtää.

Nyt on myös hyvä hetki selvittää niille, joiden mielestä NXT tulisi formaattien muka-identtisyyden vuoksi heivata, että asian laitahan on vallan toinen.

TE on reality, jossa tavikset saavat tilaisuuden koulutukseen ja developemental-sopimuksen solmimiseen WWE:n kanssa. NXT tuo kourallisen Floridan valmiiksi sopimuksenalaisia ja koulutettuja uikkarijannuja televisioon testikierrokselle. Molemmat edustavat kahta eritason vaihetta wannabestarojen uralla. Ei siis todellakaan mitään syytä pudottaa toista.

No huhhuh! Älkää tosiaa kattoko jos ette spolata mitää halua... Saa nyt kyllä nähdä miten tulee käymään!

Sen enempää spoilaamatta voin kertoa tuosta linkistä, että siellä kerrottiin vain pari varmistunutta naamaa Rumbleen.

Itse jouduin tuossa pohtimaan, olisiko suurempi ilonpilaus nähdä tuo uutinen vai miettiä ottelua katsoessaan, mitä suurta ja mahtavaa uutinen mahtoi pitää sisällään, ja lopulta pettyä, kun se ei ollutkaan mitään kummoista. Tässä vaiheessa olen iloinen, että katsoin tuon, enkä joudu jännittämään jo yleisöllekin mahdollisesti paljastuneita kahta yllätysnimeä, joilla ei ole mitään mahdollisuutta voittaa Rumblessa. Toisaalta kai joku noistakin mark-outit saa – eivät vain minulle merkkaa sen suurempaa.
